1944 North American AT6 Harvard III
We have for sale a very rare 1944 North American AT6 Harvard III. This is the first restoration project conducted by legendary warbird restorer Maurice Hammond. Maurice has been responsible for some of the finest warbird restorations in the country namely Hawker Hurricane Mk1 R4118, P51D 414419 ‘Janie’ and P51D 413521 ‘Marinell’.
Constructed by North American Aviation in Dallas Texas in 1944 with the construction number 88-16336 G-ELMH was one of 20 aircraft ordered by the British Fleet Air Arm in 1942, eventually leaving the factory in 1944 she was flown across the US to Fort Dix arriving on April 25th 1944. Then crated and shipped by sea it arrived in Lossiemouth Scotland on July 12th. The aircraft was allocated the Royal Navy Serial Number EZ341 and stationed at RNAS Crail Donibristle. EZ341 saw out her service in Lee on Solent eventually being sold to the Portuguese Air Force and based in Granja in 1956.
Now allocated the serial number 1662 it served with the Portuguese Air Force until December 1973 when it was stored. One ferry flight was made on the 18th of January 1977 to the Air Force museum at Alverca where it remained until 1991 when it was crated and returned to England.
Maurice Hammond acquired the Harvard and it was shipped to Suffolk for a nut and bolt restoration which took 24 months. Now registered G-ELMH her first post restoration flight was in April 1994 painted in the colour scheme of the 100th bomb group ‘Hack’ ship used at Thorpe Abbots airfield during WWII. The aircraft carries the nose art of B17 “Fools Rush In”.
The Restoration
The Aircraft was completely dismantled down to every last last nut and bolt. The tail cone was paint stripped, new rear bulkhead fitted, internal and external surfaces Zinc Chromated and 2K top coat applied. Tail Planes jigged and lower skins removed, new tail plane attachment fittings installed, internal and external surfaces Zinc Chromated and 2K top coat applied.
